PURPOSE:To exactly and quickly perform a program searching of a music recorded in a magnetic recording and reproducing device. CONSTITUTION:A silence detecting circuit 13 is provided to detect a silent portion formed between recorded data of a magnetic tape 5 and a control circuit 15 is also provided to execute a program searching sequence. A start marker located at the beginning position of desired recorded data is found by the circuit 15 in accordance with the selection of a program searching and the tape 5 is temporarily rewound to the previous position of the start marker. When the circuit 13 detects a silence portion between the recorded data, a mute circuit 12 is immediately turned off from that position and a reproduction is initiated.
