PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic head having an air bearing surface of a new shape. CONSTITUTION:A slider 1 has air bearing surface 103 and recessed parts 104 and 105 on the side opposite to a medium of rail parts 101 and 102. The recessed parts 104 and 105 are provided at both edges in the lateral direction of the air bearing surface 103 along the longitudinal direction of L with their respective steps (d) between the recessed parts 104 and 105 and the air bearing surfaces 103. In addition, the recessed parts 104 and 105 are formed shorter than the air bearing surface 103 respectively, so as to make the air bearing surface 103 remains unchanged on their outer sides of both ends in the longitudinal direction L.
