Disclosed are a process and intermediates of the formulae <IMAGE> +TR <IMAGE> wherein X- is halide, BF4-, R3SO3-, wherein R3 is C1-C6 alkyl, CF3, C1-C6 alkylphenyl or phenyl, and Q is a group of the formula <IMAGE> wherein R is C1-C6 alkyl; useful for preparing benzazepine intermediates of the formula <IMAGE> These benzazepine intermediates are useful for preparing benzazepines having activity as selective D1 receptor antagonists.
