PURPOSE:To provide a color converter capable of optionally setting up the number of colors for an output picture in accordance with the capacity of an output device and improving the reproducibility of an input picture. CONSTITUTION:The color converter is provided with a required number of colors inputting means 2 for specifying the number of colors (n) for output picture data, an RGB color space dividing means 3 for dividing an RGB color space in a accordance with the conversion accuracy of each required color, a frequency counting means 4 for counting the number of input picture data included in a color cell for a divided unit, a number of color cells calculating means 5 for accumulating counted frequency an inter sentative color distance calculating means 6 for calculating the optimum value of a distance (d) between respective representative colors at the time of conversion, a representative color selecting means 7 for selecting (n) representative color data, a color conversion means 8 for substituting representative color data for input picture data in each color cell, and an output picture data storing means 9 for storing substituted picture data. Thus input picture data inputted from a picture input device and having many colors are converted into output picture data having few colors. |
