A number of layers (1) of resistant material form a base substrate, on top of which are laid a series of other layers including a first screening layer (2). The screen is covered by an opaque layer (3) and a sheet of transparent material (4).Thin pieces (5) of decorative or other material may be laid onto the transparent sheet, and covered by a second transparent sheet (6) which defines an envelope in cooperation with the first transparent sheet. The whole assembly is then subjected to heat and pressure, so that phenolic or other resins contained in at least the substrate layers are fused and polymerised to create a rigid composite structure.
