A process for the hydro-treatment of a hydrocarbon charge contg. components boiling above 540 deg C, substances forming cpds. insol in toluene, S, metals, asphaltenes, carbonaceous residues and N2. This comprises: contacting the charge described, with H2 under conditions of isothermal treatment, in the presence (as catalyst) of a porous Al2O3 support contg. 2.5-6% of a non-noble gp. VIII oxide, 13-24% of a gp. VI(b) metal oxide, 0-2% of SiO2 and 0-2% of a phosphoric oxide. The catalyst has a total surface area of 175-220 m<2>/g and a total porous vol. of 0.6-0.8 cm<3>/g. The pore distribution dia. is such that /- 33% of the total porous vol. is present as prim. micropores (dia. < 100 ?A), /- 41% as sec. micropores (dia. 100-200?A) and about 16-26% as mesopores (dia. /- 200 ?A). A hydro-treated prod. is obtd. contg. a lowered content of constituents boiling above 540 deg C, matter insol. in toluene, S, metals, carbonaceous residue, asphaltenes and nitrogen; and recovery of the hydro-treated prod.
