PURPOSE: To increase the capacity of a nickel-hydrogen cell by selecting recharging temperature in such a way as to maximize the range of a specified reaction. CONSTITUTION: When a switch 44 is closed, a heating member in a heater housing 42 is excited by an EMF power supply 46 so as to heat a cell 22. The cell 22 is recharged at temperature T1 in a range of about -10 deg.C to -30 deg.C lower than temperature T2 in a range of about $10 deg. to +5 deg.C where charge is normally started. At the time of starting recharging action, temperature is in a range of +25 deg.C to +40 deg.C. With the progress of recharging, the temperature is settled in a range of -10 deg.C to -30 deg.C optimum for sufficient recharging. IN this case, the temperature T1 is selected so as to maximize a reaction range of formulas (2):(1). The formula (2) is Ni(OH)2 OH<-> =NiOOH+H2 O+e<-> , and the formula (1) is 20H<-> =1/2O2 +H2 O+2e<-> . |
