PURPOSE:To detect the polarized state of light through a small sized shakeproof detector by combining a waveguide type phase plate formed on a lithium niobate with a polarization separator, a polarization exchanger and a multiplexer. CONSTITUTION:An optical waveguide 2 is formed on a substrate 6 and a light 1 having an arbitrary polarized state impinges thereon. A polarization separator MS3 separates the light 1 into two polarization components TM, TC having field components in parallel with the surface of the substrate 6 and perpendicular thereto, respectively. In the upper stage arm, a voltage is applied to a phase plate PS4 and a variable phase 9. is imparted externally to bring about a polarized state (SOP); COSpsiexp[j(psi0+psi1)] (TM mode). In the lower stage arm, polarization converter MC5 converts the main axis of polarization by 90 deg. to bring about the SOP; Sinphi (TM mode). The polarization components interfere with each other through a multiplexer 7. The intensity of leaving light 8 is represented by Pout=1+Sin2psiCOS(psi1+psi0), and the SOP of incident light is determined by observing the behavior of the Pout with respect to the variable parameter psi1 of the phase plate 3. |
