A lamp drive unit for a LCD projector includes a lamp (31) for projecting light onto a screen via an LCD display and an indicator, a lamp drive (30), a detector (10) for sensing the brightness of a screen by the ambient lighting, reception of video signals and synchronising signals and abnormality of the received signals. A control unit (20) is provided for controlling the lamp drive (30) in response to the signals received by the detector (10).
