For the whole-packing of groups of bottles and cans a particularly advantageous carrier carton (Figs. 1-3) has been developed, which, however, has proved difficult to handle in automatic packaging lines. According to the invention, a successful handling is achieved by the use of a matrix erection station (25) forming planar blanks (2) into upright, stabilized box members (P), which are brought further along a production line, from which the upright standing articles (38) are groupwise introduced into the laterally open box members (P); these appear with a horizontally projecting lid or front panel (10), which, during the conveyance, are slidingly supported in this position until after the introduction of the articles (38), after which they are swung down and sealed to the remaining box member for complete closing thereof.
