The transverse flux machine has a stator and a rotor and magnetic circuits whose flux runs transverse to the direction of movement of the rotor. The stator has identical pole elements (12) arranged in the machine housing (16). The pole elements (12) have two spaced apart outer pole legs (52, 54) extending from a bridge part (51), and a middle pole element (56). The stator has at least one two-fibre annular winding. The fibres (24, 26) are arranged between the outer legs (52, 54) of the pole elements (18). The rotor has at least two spaced apart, exciting parts (8, 6) on top of each other, lying transverse to the direction of movement. These have permanent magnets (58), spaced apart in the direction of movement and having alternating flux directions. Weak iron elements (60) are arranged between the magnets (58). The width (b4) of these elements (60) corresponds to that (b2) of the pole element legs.The pole elements (56, 64, 66) lying between the outer legs (52, 54) of the pole elements (18) are staggered relative to the outer legs (52, 54) about a pole division (T). The magnets (58) are basically cubic and lie with their flux direction perpendicular to the plane of the pole element surfaces bounding the exciting parts (6, 8).
