A sepn. column (1) process and assembly incorporates a liq. distributor over a zone (2) enclosing solid bodies. A gas or vapour phase flows upwards through the zone (2) in contraflow to a descending liq. flow. The incoming liq. within the column (1) is converted to a flow of liq. and bubbles (27) by mixing a portion of the gaseous phase into the incoming liq.. The sepn. column (1) incorporates a pressurised fluid inlet system (5) and associated adjacent gas inlets above the zone (2) enclosing the solid bodies. Relatively low gas pressures prevail in the gas inlet zone. Ascending gas and descending liq. mix in the vicinity of the heat plate (24) and the gas entry slit (21). A shaped sieve or similar supplies a bubble flow for the gasified liq. below this zone.
