A method of reacting a tertiary alkohol t with a primary alkohol to provide an alkyl tert-alkyl ether using a crystalline aluminosilicate faujasite Y-type zeolite, modified with a fluorosulfonic acid as a catalyst. The method is particularly suited for the preparation of methyl t-butyl ether.
