The invention concerns a tooth root canal preparation instrument having a handle part (1) and an instrument part (2) mounted in the latter. Provided on the handle part (1) is a device which indicates the number of times the preparation instrument has already been used. This device comprises a movable component (3), for example a ring, which can be moved on the handle part, for example in the axial parallel direction, into a plurality of discrete positions. For this purpose, recesses, for example annular grooves (4), are provided at given distances in the axial direction. The movable component (3) can be accommodated in these recesses. After each use, the movable component (3) is advanced by one position so that it is possible to tell at any time from the position of the movable component (3) how many times the instrument has already been used.
