As depicted in Figure 19, the instant invention provides a "trick play" method for recording MPEG compatible advanced television (ATV) signals. The system comprises an ATV decoder (100), a "trick play" processor (200), and an SD DVCR (300). The video processor (150) provides a selection function for switching between ATV and "Trick Play" video images. A decoder (130) controls the switching action based upon the acquisition and decoding of an I frame from a recorded Group of Pictures (GOP).
