The character data compressed and stored on a memory is displayed on a display by command signal designated by an user. The electronic book includes a first memory(10) for storing text data compressed by page units, a display(14) for displaying the text data by page units, a key unit for inputting command key by an user, a second memory(20) for storing page data, a battery(30) for providing power to the first and the second memory and display, a switch(32) for providing power supplied from a battery to the first and the second memory(10, 20) or display(14), and a CPU(18) for controlling the electronic book.
