The eye (5) observes the eyepiece (12) of the instrument (2) through a cube (19) of high refractive index with two opposite faces at right angles to the line of sight. The sheet (14) across a diagonal of the cube is partially transparent to the visible light and at least partially reflects the infrared light from a source (15) via a semitransparent mirror (16). The infrared reflection from the cornea or retina passes through to a first CCD camera (17) providing one output (9) of the instrument. Part of the visible light is reflected into a second camera (18) providing the other output (10). <IMAGE>
