The present invention relates to an improved method for the production of antibodies to tumorassociated gangliosides using ganglioside lactones. The resulting antibodies are useful in the detection and treatment of tumors containing gangliosides. The present invention also relates to methods of treatment of tumors by active immunization using ganglioside lactones.
