An apparatus and method for analyzing feet using matrixes of pressures sensors (45, 75) and optical sensors (41, 42, 43, 44, 71, 72, 73, 74) connected to a controller (200) and a monitor (24). The apparatus includes a structure (22) which houses a controller (200) and a monitor (24) and defines right and left foot wells (40, 70). The floor of each foot well (40, 70) includes a matrix of pressure sensor contacts (60, 90), covered by a variably resistive pressure pad (61, 91), which are accessed by a digital signal processor (230) to acquire foot pressure distribution data. Infrared LED's (100, 101, 125, 168, 169, 180) and phototransistors (135, 136, 157, 171, 172, 175), separately addressed by a microprocessor (244), are located around the perimeter of each foot well (40, 70) for measuring the length, width, and heights of a foot. According to one method, the digital signal processor (230) and microprocessor (244) provide data enabling the controller (200) to determine and display recommended orthotic prescriptions or insole selection information, as well as center of pressure and postural sway information which are useful in diagnosing and treating certain medical problems. |
