[Also in Group XXIV] A machine-tool head comprises a rotatable tool spindle 24, 30, a feed bush 14 for the spindle, a hollow spindle-drive shaft 72 transverse to the spindle, a drive sleeve 38 fixed to and surrounding the spindle coaxially, gearing 74, 40 interconnecting the spindle-drive shaft and the drive sleeve, a rotary spindle-feed drive shaft 76-78 located coaxially within the spindledrive shaft and including a clutch 90, a hollow threaded rod 48 fixed to the feed bush and located coaxially between the spindle and the drive sleeve, a nut 50 screwed on to the threaded rod, and spindle-feed gearing 58, 78 interconnecting the nut and the spindle-feed drive shaft. The spindle 24 is thus rotated via gear 70, shaft 72, gears 74, 40, the sleeve 38 connected by a flange 36 to a sleeve 34, and shaft 32. The spindle is fed through the gear 76, the clutch 90 (consisting of a spring 88 forcing the ball 90 between balls 98 and rollers 112), the gears 78, 58, the nut 50, the rod 48 and the bush 14. The feed is stopped by manually depressing a button 130 and thereby moving a plunger 132, a rod 138, a ring 136 and rods 140, 144. It is also stopped automatically when the ring 136 is depressed by a yoke 150 actuated by a rod 174 engaging a cam 178 in a groove 172 of a ring 166 rotated by gears 162 driven by a sleeve 120 rotating with the nut 50. The position at which the automatic feed is stopped is adjusted by slackening a clamp 170 and rotating the ring 166. The spindle may be hand-fed by disengaging the clutch 90 and rotating a hand wheel 118 which drives the nut 50 through the sleeve 120 and a gear 122. The whole spindle head may be adjusted angularly by worm gearing 182. |
