A heavy sleeve component (2), whose mechanical resistance is approximately the same as that of the gun barrel, is attached as a forward extension of the barrel. The sleeve includes a number of radial apertures (3) for passage of exhaust gases, and a collar (10) with projecting fastening formations.A lightweight muzzle (5) cooperates with the sleeve, and includes apertures with projecting fins (8,9) which cooperate with and extend the apertures of the sleeve. Fasteners (11) connect the inner end of the muzzle to the projections of the collar of the sleeve. The sleeve may be formed as an integral portion of the outer end of the gun barrel.
