The lifting mechanism comprises a tilt-up member in the shape of a U mounted on a motor-driven shaft 21. On each side, an arm 10 of the tilt-up member is connected on the one hand to the second foot element 7 of the bed and on the other hand to the hinge 8 between the first 5 and second 7 foot elements at points 14, 12 which form different angles with the turning shaft 21. Thus, when the shaft 11 first begins to turn, the second foot element 7 rises faster than the hinge 8 and the elements 5 and 7 are inclined in a straight line. As the shaft 21 continues to turn, the hinge 8 rises faster than the element 7, with the result that a bending develops about the hinge 8 until the element 5 is inclined and the element 7 horizontal.
