The apparatus and method senses pollution degree while cleaning the laundry at an initial stage, and supplies the detergent based on the pollution degree so as to enhance the cleaning efficiency. It comprises the sensor(20) installed under a tub(17) for sensing the pollution state of the laundry; detergent vessels(3,4) storing the detergent; a motor(7) controlled by a microprocessor; detergent supply pipes(3,4) connected to lower parts of the detergent vessels(3,4); a sensor(9) for determining amount of the detergent to be put into the vessels(3,4).
