PURPOSE:To obtain a liquid crystal orienting agent having good orientability of liquid crystals, a large pretilt angle and good adhesiveness by using incorporating a polymer obtd. by simultaneously using a mono-substd. phenylene diamine and a diamine contg. a sulfide bond and bringing both into reaction with a tetracarboxylic dianhydride. CONSTITUTION:This liquid crystal orienting agent contains the polymer obtd. by bringing (A) the tetracarboxylic dianhydride expressed by formula I as well as (B) the diamine which contains the mono-substd. phenylene diamine expressed by formula II and the sulfide bond-contg. diamine expressed by formula III and in which the content of the mono-substd. phenylene diamine based on the total amt. of the diamine is <=80mol% and the content of the sulfide bond-contg. diamine is >=5mol% into reaction and/or its imide polymer. In the formula I to formula III, R<1> denotes a quadrivalent org. group; R<2> denotes a bivalent org. group selected from a group consisting of -O-, -COO-, -OCO-, -NHCO-, -CONH- and -CO-; R<3> denotes a univalent org. group, respectively and n denotes >=1 integer. |
