The cylinder block bulkheads 16 have respective crankshaft apertures 18 and respective bearing caps 26 with interlocking stepped mating surfaces 20, 22, 24, 30, 32. The caps restrain radial outward movement of the bulkheads in the region of the apertures. The surfaces 24 may be located outwardly of the bolts 38 (Fig. 3). The block and caps may be formed of aluminium alloy and ferrous metal or both of the same material. <IMAGE>
