Determination of the monomer concn., Cm,p, in latex swollen with monomer in the heterogeneous phase involves using a combination of pulse-induced emulsion polymerisation and gel permeation chromatography. Polymerisation is induced with an intense pulsed UV lamp, pulsed laser or by rapid addn. of an inhibitor. The polymer emulsion is then removed from the reactor and split. Polymer A is formed by emulsion polymerisation, whilst polymer B is formed by pulse-induced polymerisation of the same monomer in the homogeneous phase at the concn. Cm,hop but otherwise under the same conditions. The mol.wt. distribution of both polymers and the mol.wt. at the point of inflection of the distribution curve, i.e. Mhep for polymer A and Mhop for polymer B, are determined. The value of Cm,p is determined from the equation: Cm,p = Cm,hop x (Mhep/Mhop).
