An assembly (10) reduces odours in closed rooms by ionisation, the residues being collected by an electrode (13) maintained at a defined potential difference. The ionisation electrodes (22l - n) and the collector electrode (13) are arranged to produce a bowed ionisation field (271, 222, 273) within the room. The ionisation strength (N) of the ion source and the field strength within the space to be cleaned (271) are set such that the field strength in this zone is at least enough to accelerate the ions to a speed (v) as described by the relationship v = l/ tau , where l is the longest path which an ion takes within this zone and tau is the life of the ion.
