A wave and/or tidal energy extractor comprises a rotary member carried for rotation on an energy-extractor member located at a fixed position in a water body from which tidal or wave energy is to be extracted, a cable (14) passing round the rotary member (18) in driving relationship therewith and attached at one end to a float (12) capable of floating on the water body (13) and at the other end to an auxiliary biasing float (19), means for connecting the energy-extractor member for rotation with the rotary member when the rotary member is rotated, in use, in one sense driven by the cable pulled by the float due to a rise in the surface level but being disconnectable from the rotary member to allow the latter to rotate freely in the opposite sense, the biasing float causing the cable to return round the rotary member in the said opposite sense when the water level falls to maintain the length of the cable between the rotary member and the float substantially taut. The extractor may be formed as a modular unit connectable with other such units to an energy utiliser or conversion system such as an electricity generator.
