A container (1) for a pasty material comprising an oblong cylindrical housing with a neck provided at the upper end thereof for connection to a dispensing device of the kind which does not replace the dispensed material with air. Said container (1) includes a follower plunger (2) which is slidable in sealing contact with the inside of said oblong cylindrical housing as the material is discharged from said container (1). Said follower plunger (2) has an oblong outer contact rim (21) consisting of two portions (21') having a relatively greater curvature and being defined by a pair of arcs of a circle that have the same radius of curvature and the same first mutual mirror symmetry (Sr) and are interconnected by connecting segments (21"). The connecting segments (21") are preferably defined by a pair of arcs of a circle that both have a radius of curvature different from the first and a second mutual mirror symmetry perpendicular to said first mirror symmetry (SR).
