The spark plug 32 and fuel injector 34 are centrally located in the cylinder head 16 between pairs of intake and exhaust valves (24 and 26, Fig. 4) with the spark plug being closer to the exhaust valves than the injector. The exhaust valve axes (EA, Fig. 4) are at a 2 to 3 DEG greater inclination to the cylinder axis (A) than the intake valve axes (IA) to provide a smaller combustion chamber volume at the exhaust valve side. The intake passages (28, Fig. 4) in the cylinder head 16 change shape from circular at the upstream ends to parallel sided with reduction in cross-sectional area adjacent the valve guides (42) and increase in cross-sectional area at an angle of 7 to 8 DEG to the circular valve ports. <IMAGE>
