A main body (32) formed generally as a hollow cylinder has an open end sized to receive a drill chuck head (31) into the main body (32). An outer shell (36) formed generally as a hollow cylinder is mounted to the main body (32). A gear drive assembly (50) is mounted to the main body (32) and engaged with the face gear (72) of the chuck. The outer shell (36) is selectively manually engageable with the outer shell (36) via the gear drive (50) assembly such that rotating the drill chuck head (31) opens or closes the chuck (31), depending upon the direction of rotation. The outer shell (36) has a free wheeling position in which a person may grasp the outer shell (36) and hold it to guide the drill without causing the drill chuck (31) to tend to open or close.
