In smelting iron ore, the washed sludge has the water extracted to a residual moisture level before further processing. Coal dust is added to the sludge, together with quicklime (30) as a bonding agent. The sludge is granulated to be returned to the smelting gassing zone (15) to increase the base level of the slag (17) to a max. 1.25 and pref. max. 1.20. Before further processing, the sludge water content is reduced to 25-50% and pref. 35-40%. After water extraction, coal dust is added at a rate of up to 30%, and pref. up to 25%. Before the granules are fed to the smelting gassing zone (15), they are given a carbonate coating through an exhaust gas with a CO2 content. The carbonate granule coating is applied in a coal drying assembly (32).

|
