PURPOSE:To provide a catalyst having high selectivity and improved life in vapor phase orthoalkylation reaction of phenols using alkyl alcohol as an alkylation agent and a precursor thereof and to produce orthoalkylated pahenols, pref., orthomethylated phenols using the catalyst CONSTITUTION:A precursor of an orthoalkylation catalyst of phenols is composed of a dry mixture of manganese oxalate (a), phenolic resin fine particles (b) and at least one magnesium compd. (c) selected from magnesium carbonate and magnesium oxide and, when this precursor is calcined, the catalyst can be obtained. Orthoalkylated phenols can be obtained with high selectivity by subjecting alkyl alcohols and phenols to vapor phase reaction in the presence of the orthoalkylation catalyst.
