PURPOSE:To obtain a gasoline substrate, having a high octane number and good in quality and causing a small amount of by-products such as gums by bringing a hydrocarbon mixture containing a tertiary olefin into contact with a specific alcohol in the presence of a cation exchange resin. CONSTITUTION:This method for producing a tertiary alkyl ether comprises bringing (A) a hydrocarbon mixture containing a tertiary olefin (e.g. a mixture of isobutylene, 2-methyl-1-butene, etc., with butane, butene, benzene, etc.) into contact with (B) an alcohol containing one or more selected from the group consisting of phosphorus, silicon, germanium and boron as the central element and 0.5-15wt.% heteropoly acid containing molybdenum or tungsten as a coordination element in the presence of a cation exchange resin. |
