Polymethacrylimide polymers which are low in amide or N-alkylamide groups and in carboxyl and carboxylic anhydride groups are obtained by heating copolymers comprising from 1 to 60 mol% of methacrylamide and/or N-alkylmethacrylamides and from 40 to 99 mol% of alkyl methacrylates and/or phenyl methacrylate to from 170 to 450 DEG C in an aliphatic monoalcohol.
