A device 1 for filtering liquids comprises a pipe with a wall section 5 designed as filter, a liquid inlet 3 to the pipe, a material discharge outlet 29 for evacuation of the material filtered out and a collecting element 9 for the filtered liquid. The device has a cleaning element in the form of a piston 13 with a piston face 14 facing towards the material discharge outlet. At suitable intervals a drive element 11 moves the piston into the filter, so that this is scraped clean of the material filtered out. A valve 13 situated between the filter and the material discharge outlet 29 is normally closed, so that the piston 13 can compress the material filtered out. When a sufficient quantity of material has been collected the valve 15 opens and the piston 13 pushes the filtered material out of the device. <IMAGE>
