The invention relates to a process for effectively using, caring for, establishing the condition of, etc., an area of land or water, in which process the condition of the area is assessed by means of samples taken from the land or water, and possible measures or the like are directed towards the area on the basis of the resulting assessment. The process is characterised in that the microbial growth is determined from the samples which are taken from the area which is to be investigated and from which the condition of the area is assessed, and the microbial growth results which are obtained are used when planning the measures or the like which are to be directed towards the area. The invention also relates to means for implementing the process according to the invention.
