Use is made of a semiconductor laser which can oscillate freely over a plurality of longitudinal modes, this laser being capable of locking onto an incident optical beam. The modulation is transposed over the modes ( lambda 21, lambda 22, lambda 23,...) which are not at the wavelength ( lambda 1) of the incident beam. Application in optical telecommunications.
