Optical transceiver system with test function e.g. for half=duplex and full=duplex operation

The system includes a data transmitter and an optical transceiver connected to an optical fibre across a link device. Data is transmitted and received via the optical fibre. A digital signal is generated with an autocorrelation function equal to the Dirac pulse which is transmitted across the system. An analogue analysis signal, which is received by optical reflection of the digital test signal, is digitised. The digital analysis signal is correlated with the digital test signal to form an impulse response signal which characterises reflection in the optical fibre.
