The safety rails are made up from units consisting of two wooden rails (5, 6) placed one above the other. Each rail has a flat edge (5.1) which forms a supporting area running horizontally along the rails. The rails are fixed together by a shaped metal insert (7, 12, 16) which fits into grooves (5.3, 6.3, 5.4, 6.4) which are cut vertically into the rails. The insert may be S shaped or in the shape of a cross. The insert (7, 12) has a central web which is sandwiched between the two flat sides of the rails. The ends of two sets of rails are attached to a post (4) which is partially buried in the ground. The rails are fixed to the posts by shaped bars (8) which are attached to a collar (9) by bolts (10). Tie rods (11) pass through the bars, the rails and the insert (7 - 12) and the head of the tie rod (11.1) is visible on the road side of the rails. The safety rails may consist of three rails. An additional metal section may be inserted in grooves at the ends of the rails in addition to the insert. The tie rods also pass through this section.
