PURPOSE: To provide a block matching method for generating motion vectors. CONSTITUTION: Block matching is performed on images having continuously rising resolution by improving motion vectors which are decided to images having lower resolution. In each image having rising resolution, a search area is defined in a limited search range by the motion vector related to the corresponding image area at the search having the next lower resolution. At at least one level of image resolution, a search block is overlapped so that a plurality of search areas in the limited search range can be obtained (2081 ,2 ) and block matching search is performed on each block at the next higher level. |
