MOTION VECTOR DETECTING METHOD

PURPOSE:To prevent control over a residue memory from becoming complex even if search ranges are made to overlap with each other when a motion vector is found by representative matching by specifying the overlap of the search ranges. CONSTITUTION:Let N be MX[1-(1/P)], where M is the length of the search ranges, N is the overlap of the search ranges; and P is an integer. For example, the search range S1 and search range S2, search range S2 and search range S3, and search range S3 and search range S4 are made to overlap with each other each by a half. Consequently, the control over a step memory is facilitated. Namely, two residue memories are provided; and the left-side resides L1-L4 of the respective search ranges S1-S4 are stored in one residue memory and the right-side residues R1-R4 of the search ranges S1-S4 are stored in the other residue memory. Addresses which are delayed by a quantity corresponding to a half of the search ranges are given to control the two residue memories.
