Method for the prepn. of carboxylic acid esters (carboxylates) comprises reacting carbonyl cpds. of formula (I) with metal ions that cleave and oxidise the C-X bond, and alcohols of formula (II), opt. under a carbon monoxide atmos.: R = H, OH, 1-10C alkoxy, 6-10C aryloxy or bisphenoxy; R' = 1-10C alkyl or 6-30C aryl; and X = H, 1-10C alkyl or 6-10C aryl.
