Hyperproliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells following endothelial injury can be prevented by exposing the smooth muscle cells to a photo-activatable agent that inhibits proliferation. The photo-activatable agent is taken up into the cells, and is then activated by exposing the cells to activating light. The agent may be administered to a patient systemically and then selectively activated by directing activating light onto the site in the vessel where smooth muscle cell hyperproliferation is to be prevented.
