A cross-support member (12) extends between the opposed side panels (14 and 16) of an inverted U-shaped boot insert (10) to prevent the side panels from collapsing toward one another. The cross-support member (12) may be a separate structural element which is associated with the inverted U-shaped boot insert (10), or may be formed as an integral part of the inverted U-shaped boot insert (10) (e.g. by partially cutting out the cross-support member (12) from at least one of the side panels (14 and 16) and/or by affixing the cross-support member (12) to an interior surface of at least one of the side panels (14 and 16)). The cross-support member (12) may itself include lateral stiffening panels (12d and 12e) of desired geometry (e.g., triangular, rectangular, etc.) which are preferably formed as an integral part of the cross-support member (12) by folding a lateral section of the cross-support member (12) angularly out of the cross-support member's (12) plane.
