The packing gland (1) comprises a box (2) with a screwed lid (3). A supporting surface (8) for a ring gasket (4) is incorporated into the end (6) of the box, having a side chamfer (7), with a surface (8) sloping at an angle of between 30 and 90 degrees on the central side. The ring gasket is capable of plastic deformation and is axially symmetrical. The outer part of the ring gasket is pressed against a conical section (9) of the lid as it is screwed onto the box, causing the internal diameter of the gasket to be reduced.
