Plastics optical fibre connection to ferrule contg. tapered bore

The fibre (1) is pushed into the bore (3) along the axis of a metallic ferrule (2), leaving a small gap (not depicted) all round it. The ferrule is heated to such a temp. that the plastic material of the fibre expands beyond a step (6) at one end of the bore. The other end is tapered (4) outwards so that an increasing space remains around the fibre when the gap within the bore has been filled. A heated plate is pressed on to the fibre end so as to fill this space and leave a smooth termination.
