COMPOSITE LIQUID FILTER

A liquid filter apparatus (10) useful in removing particulates from parts washing solvent. A filter assembly includes an exterior, fluid-impermeable container (30) and an interior filter element (31) with permeable sidewalls and inlet and outlet ends. In use, liquid entering the element may pass unfiltered entirely through the element and exit through a sidewall of the exterior container, or any part of such liquid may pass through the element and into a portion of the assembly outside the sleeve but inside the exterior container. This liquid is filtered. Consequently, the filter continually operates in both filtration and bypass modes. The exterior container comprises front and rear cover panels (32, 34), a solvent outlet spigot (36), and a flexible hose (38) terminating in a fountain brush (40). Solvent is taken from a drum (24) or reservoir (22) using a pump (26) and fed through a conduit (28) into the filter assembly and therethrough onto parts to be washed in the sink (12).
