Methods of treating hypotension and septic shock by introducing into a mammal suspected of needing such treatment an effective amount of transforming growth factor- beta or an active fragment thereof to inhibit transcription of a gene encoding inducible nitric oxide synthase but not a gene encoding constitutive nitric oxide synthase.
