The present invention relates to antisense DNA oligomers which are complementary to regions of the RNA of the small ribosomal subunit of mammalian cells, which are selected from the group consisting of: a) nucleotides 1 to 20 in human 18S rRNA corresponding to region 10 in E. coli 16S rRNA; b) nucleotides 595 to 641 in human 18S rRNA corresponding to region 530 in E. coli 16S rRNA; c) nucleotides 1182 to 1220 in human 18S rRNA corresponding to region 900 in E. coli 16S rRNA; and d) nucleotides 1695 to 1715 in human 18S rRNA corresponding to region 1400 in E. coli 16S rRNA; whereby, said oligomers decrease the occurrence of ribosomal frameshifting and inhibit the expression of viral enzymatic proteins.
